Single Drug Screen collection Policy and Procedure
Single Donor Collection steps
**Step 1: Identification and Consent**
- Verify the donor's identity through government-issued identification.
- Clearly explain the purpose of the drug screen and obtain written consent from the donor.
**Step 2: Privacy and Dignity**
- Ensure a private and secure collection area to uphold the donor's dignity.
- Communicate clear instructions for the collection process to minimize errors.
**Step 3: Sample Collection**
- Direct the donor to provide a urine sample in a sterile collection cup.
- Collect an adequate amount of the specimen for testing.
**Step 4: Documentation and Chain of Custody**
- Document the collection details, including time, date, and collector's information.
- Establish and maintain a secure chain of custody for the collected sample.
**Step 5: Storage and Transportation**
- Properly label and store the specimen in a secure location.
- Transport the sample to the testing facility with appropriate precautions to avoid tampering.
**Split Specimen Collection:**
**Step 1: Initial Collection (Primary Specimen)**
- Follow the same steps as in a single drug screen collection.
- Collect the initial urine sample from the donor.
**Step 2: Splitting the Sample**
- Split the collected sample into two containers (A and B).
- Ensure the volumes in both containers are sufficient for testing.
**Step 3: Secure Documentation**
- Document the splitting process thoroughly, including details of the split and labeling of containers A and B.
- Maintain a clear chain of custody for both specimens.
**Step 4: Storage of Split Specimens**
- Store containers A and B securely, ensuring they remain sealed and tamper-evident.
- Both specimens must be kept at the appropriate temperature until transportation.
**Step 5: Testing Procedure**
- Test the primary specimen (Container A) initially.
- If the result is non-negative, the split specimen (Container B) is tested to confirm or refute the findings.
**Step 6: Reporting and Documentation**
- Document the testing results for both specimens accurately.
- Maintain clear records of the entire process, including any actions taken in response to the test outcomes.
Both procedures prioritize accuracy, confidentiality, and adherence to legal requirements, with split specimen collections providing an additional layer of verification in case of contested results.
